The Aston Martin DB7 Zagato An Instant Hit



The classic Zagato line from Aston Villa had an addition with the 2003 DB7. The DB7 was first unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concourse and immediately was a hit with the car world as the DB7 carries on with the classic Zagato tradition with its exsquisite look, sleek design style, and ultimate performance. Car Designations Explained - The European Influence


There's nothing like using the motherland's terminology to make your car sound like it's got more class. Of course, you'll never drive an Aston Martin Black Pudding, but harking back to the gentlemanly days can give a marque some extra kudos.
Shooting-brake (or shooting-break, depending on which country you're in)
In the 1800s and through to the early 1900s a brake was a type of open-topped horse-drawn carriage of any size designed for hunting. It was designed to carry the driver and a gamekeeper at the front and several sportsmen with guns in the back. Dogs, guns and game were carried alongside in racks. While this sounds like it could have morphed into a mafia-style limo, it's more commonly used to describe a station wagon, or estate-type of car.
Aston Martin are particularly fond of the term (DB5, DB6, Virage, Vantage, Lagonda and DBS all had the term applied), and it's been resurrected recently by Audi for a couple of concept cars. Ferrari, Porsche, Volvo, Bentley and even Lamborghini have produced concepts or production cars. Although, anyone trying to shoot a pheasant while hanging out of the side of a Lamborghini would need heat-guided missiles.

Drophead coupe (or drophead coupé)
E-Type Jaguar 187 8Basically, it's a convertible (or cabriolet in British English). The name applies to both cars with a retractable hardtop roof, or a soft folding top. The concept behind a 'convertible' was that you could 'convert' your open-topped car into one that had a roof. British manufacturers tend to use the designation with Aston Martin (DB2/4 Drophead Coupe), Bentley (Arnage Drophead Coupe) and Daimler Double-Six 50 Sport Corsica Drophead Coupe). Rolls-Royce released its 2008 Phantom Drophead Coupe at the January 2007 Detroit North American International Auto Show.
Fixed head coupe
It's the opposite of a drophead coupe. A coupe with a fixed roof, the term was mainly used by British manufacturers such as Jaguar (e.g. XK150, E-Type) well as Rolls-Royce (e.g. Corniche), Aston Martin (e.g. DB3S), TVR (e.g. Tasmin 280i), and Bentley (e.g. Mark VI Park Ward).

The Porsche Carrera GT is not really a GT car - more of a supercar or hypercar.
So, as long as it sells cars, car manufacturers will continue to evoke the images of a halcyon yesteryear.

Aston Martin - Opportunities and Threats Under New Ownership


The big news this week for Aston Martin fans is that the luxury sports car maker made famous by James Bond 007 is heading back into British hands.
Ford announced that they have sold the company to a UK-led group fronted by Dave Richards - boss of respected motorsport specialist Prodrive - for £479 million.
The American car giant has had a big stake in Aston Martin since 1987, buying the company outright in 1994 and overseeing a period of unprecedented sales success. Under Ford's ownership, the company developed a number of respected new models and reported record sales of 7,000 cars in 2006.
But with the onset of Ford's financial troubles, the group decided to sell the luxury marque. Ford lost more than $12bn in 2006, and faces huge restructuring costs. However the group has still held on to a £40 million slice of the company.
The sportscar specialist will remain at its purpose-built factory in Gaydon (Warwickshire), where 1,800 people are employed.
Prodrive success
Under the leadership of Dave Richards, Prodrive has built a formidable reputation in motorsport, running the Aston Martin racing team in the sports car series around the world as well as the highly-successful Subaru rally team.
Dave Richards also managed the BAR Formula One team from 2002 to 2004, taking the team from eighth to second in the manufacturers world championship in that period, before Honda took a greater role and BAR team was rebranded. Richards was also a leading figure in the Benetton F1 team in the late 90s.
Most interestingly for motorsport fans, Prodrive owns a slot to enter the 2008 F1 World Championship. But the consortium has called 'unfounded' speculation that Prodrive may now brand its F1 cars Aston Martin.
Also in the consortium with Dave Richards is finance and shipping banker John Sinders and two Kuwaiti investment companies.
Mr Richards reassured Aston Martin fans that the new owners were committed to the company long term and would not be seeking a quick turnaround like many private equity groups do.
Exciting future
As well as the potential for an Aston Martin presence in F1 racing to excite fans, the new owners of the company have announced plans to step up production by more than a quarter in the next three years.
Growth will be driven by the launch of two new models - the DBS, as seen in latest James Bond Casino Royale, and the four-door Rapide - taking the marque's range to seven cars.
At least 200 more workers are expected to be taken on at an expanded Warwickshire plant as a result.
Questions ahead
But looking further ahead, the biggest question facing the new owners is, without the backing of a well-funded major car group enjoyed by many of Aston Martin's main rivals, whether they will have enough cash to spend on developing the brand's cars to keep them ahead of the competition.
A further threat is looming EU car emissions regulations. If these are implemented on a per-manufacturer basis, that would present a major problem for independent car makers like Aston Martin, unable to meet average emissions limits across their range by balancing the inevitably higher output of their powerful sporting models against low-emissions city cars, as large car groups will be able to.
For the company to survive under such an imposed EU regime, huge investment would be needed to produce low-emissions powerplants that nevertheless maintain the required level of power and performance. Though it remains to be seen exactly how the EU will enforce the lower emissions limits on car makers that have been agreed.

Aston Villa Football Shirts Get a Much Needed Lift


If you're an Aston Villa fan, you must be licking your lips at the prospect of buying this seasons shirt. After all, in comparison to recent efforts it's absolutely fantastic.
Nike have stepped in to manufacture the kits this time round and they've done a great job. All too many Aston Villa football shirts have been overcomplicated and fussy in recent times. This looks to have been put behind them now with a very tidy, sleek effort.
Martin O'Neill has taken over a team and quickly set about improving everything to do with the set up. Randay Lerner's cash has certainly give him the tools he needs to get the playing personnel in and there is even talk about extending Villa Park.
But when it comes to image, Aston Villa were really in need of a massive image overhaul. They've been long considered an old fashioned team but those days look to finally be gone. The Nike kit brings them right up to date after a long standing agreement with Reebok which didn't see many good shirts developed.
I'm sure merchandise sales will be up this season, as the combination of improved football and improved football shirts becomes apparrent. Aston Villa have a massive following and this shouldn't be easily forgotton. Outside of the top 4 they consistently fill a massive stadium and those fans will be looking brighter and happier this season in the fashionable new shirts.
There's been a lot written about football becoming a business in the past, so if this is the case then more teams need to think about their valued customers. Aston Villa have come up with a great peice of merchandise but not enough teams are doing this, and they owe it to their fans!

Aston Villa's Martin O'Neill lands long-term target
Aston Villa have concluded their long-term pursuit of Curtis Davies, by landing the West Brom defender on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent deal.
Martin O'Neill has made no secret of his admiration for the promising central defender but continued dialogue with West Brom failed to yield a positive outcome.
The Ulsterman was loath to pay a figure he thought inflated but nevertheless, it had been reported that the two clubs had concurred on a fee of around £10million.
Loan surprise
It is then, to somewhat surprise, that West Brom have sanctioned a key player's departure in a loan switch.
Should Davies impress at Villa Park then it is anticipated the Premier League club will pay an as yet undisclosed fee for the England hopeful.
Since moving to The Hawthorns from Luton back in August 2005, Davies has established himself as one of the best, and most sought after players, outside of the top flight.
Aston Villa must be ready with lots of cash following their record signing in of six new players in preparation for the next British premiership season.
The club seems to be dead set to make an indelible mark in the 2007/2008 UK football season. They have signed in new players in the midfield; back play and front strikers to strengthen their defenses, striking force and forward delivery from the midfield. I think this will be a team to watch this season. They might just make it to the top three if not the winners of the league cup this season. They better do exactly that, otherwise they won’t be able to justify the heavy spending on the players’ transfers. Go O'Neill Go!!!

The Most Famous Sports Car


In 1959, Ian Fleming penned Goldfinger and inserted his secret agent hero, James Bond, into a 1959 Aston Martin DB-3. There was a lag between the story's release, however, and the motion picture that shared its name. By the time Sean Connery was prepared to take out Goldfinger, the DB-3 seemed dated. James Bond got behind the wheel of a 1963 Aston Martin DB-5 and made it the most famous sports car in the world.
Sports cars are wonderful, but the Bond car had a few special features that made it even more appealing to moviegoers. It was outfitted with bulletproof glass, machine guns, and other assorted gadgetry. Its understated color scheme fit the Bond character perfectly, and the car's role in the film afforded it significant screen time. Within a few years, there would be no better-known sports car in the world.
The Aston Martin DB-5 was a fine car in its own right, but the popularity of Goldfinger and Thunderball (in which it also appeared) elevated it to a global phenomena. Even today, after countless intervening James Bond movies, when someone says they want a Bond car, the mind races back to the DB-5 made famous over forty years ago.
An American eventually purchased the original Bond car and kept it in superb condition, using it primarily for special appearances and events. In 1999, the DB-5 was stolen from outside a Boca Raton, Florida airport. The would-be thief didn't blend into traffic well in the Aston Martin and was apprehended.
The remarkable performance of James Bond's DB-5 was no doubt aided by Q and the other technicians at headquarters. Movie feats such as outracing a Ferrari were beyond the limitations of the real DB-5. Although a fine sports car, the DB-5 was really designed more as a touring vehicle than as a speedster. It possessed a six-cylinder engine that topped out at approximately 280 bhp. It's top-end speed was approximately 140 mph, and it took over 8 seconds to achieve speeds in excess of 60 mph from start.
Although the DB-5 was by no means considered a clunker, it was not the top performer in its class. Ferrari, Jaguar and others were producing sports cars at the same time that outperformed the Aston Martin by a considerable margin. These cars, however, faded into history as the uniquely British styling of the DB-5 and its use by one her majesty's best secret service agents elevated it to worldwide popularity.
The ever-popular DB-5 has been reproduced countless time in miniature, with the famed Danbury mint still offering a small-scale replica of the famous sports car. Items relating to the DB-5 are popular crossover collectibles, coveted by fans of film and British sports cars alike.
There are many other famous sports cars. The Ferrari Testarossa from Miami Vice, Steve McQueen's Mustang from Bullitt, the Spider in which James Dean met his fate and other sports cars all share places in our collective memories. But the Aston Martin DB-5, propelled by two incredibly successful films and attractive in its own right, remains the world's most famous sports car.

Owning A Ferrari - Is It Worth It?


Driving a Ferrari has always been a dream of mine. I am unfortunate that I remember Danny Wild driving his red Ferrari around Europe in the Persuaders on TV back in the early 70s. But then when you do get to drive one, you realise that they are only designed to be driven one way, and that’s fast.
But of course with speed limit, kids, other drivers on the road you will find that only a very small time can be dedicate to driving a Ferrari as it should be. In fact much of the driving you would do is totally unsuitable for a Ferrari. OK I will be honest with you, I don’t own a Ferrari but I have driven one. I hired a car and drove it around a racetrack as it was designed to do, which a qualified instructor of course. This has totally changed my perception of why people must own a Ferrari.
I cannot now see any reason to own one at all, except as a status symbol. Nothing comes close to driving this super car around at 150mph, so much legal fun it’s amazing, but driving it at 30mph just seems so much of a hassle. Then my driving instructor came up with some facts. He said add up the cost of buying your Ferrari then add on the insurance, add on your yearly running costs in including servicing, tyres etc.
Then he said calculate how many hours you would actually get to drive your car. Then calculate how many hours you would drive the car as it should be driven. In both cases you get a ridiculously high hourly rate to own a car. So much so that to hire one like I did with professional instruction becomes a bargain.
So I have readjusted my dream, I will stick with my comfortable road car but when I fancy, to the racetrack I will go in the full knowledge I am getting a better deal than the rich and famous. There are many track deals around the UK stating from £99 why not give a try and see if your dream changes.

Fascination of Owning Ferrari Enzo



Ferrari always used racetracks for testing new concepts, cars and technology in their race cars and after few years these cars and technologies appeared on the roads. So it is a new Ferrari Enzo, a pure sports car named after ferrari company founder - Enzo Ferrari. He felt that best road sports cars should be created from race cars. New Enzo has all its technology from F1 racing. There were used advanced composite materials for bodywork.

Racing Series For Ferrari Owners



If you bought a Ferrari, you likely made that purchase for investment reasons, you tell yourself. And that is likely true, but what is also true is that you bought it because you love to drive a sports car fast, it cannot be denied. If this describes your relationship to your Ferrari, and if you have had some race training and experience, then you might be ready to participate in the North American Ferrari Challenge Series for non-professional racers who are Ferrari owners competing in Ferrari racing against each other.
Ferrari selects a different model vehicle to feature each year of the Ferrari series. For this year, F430 Challenge with a booming 479 hp is the car of choice. Ferraris are one of the most recognizable symbols of wealth and status in the world. Their history starts with Enzo Ferrari, the company's founder. He never wanted to build racecars-he wanted to race himself.
Instead, Ferrari founded his company, Scudiera Ferrari, as a sponsorship company for racecar drivers. Originally independent, it soon became a division of Alfa Romeo.
During World War II, Alfa Romeo was taken over by Mussolini as part of the war effort. Ferrari left Alfa Romeo, but his company was forced to help the war effort by selling aircraft parts and machine tools.
Ferrari moved his factory to Meranello, where he started making racecars. The racing teams he sponsored became influential in racing from the end of World War II. He also began to make commercial sports cars to support his racing business.
Fiat bought a small share of the company in 1965. In 1969, they increased their share to 50%. Ferrari stayed on as managing director until the early 70's. He died in 1988, at the age of 90.
Enzo Ferrari was known for his eccentricities, including his famous contempt for his commercial customers. He was upfront about the fact that he only built and sold commercial cars to fund the racing end of his business. Ferrari claimed to dislike his customers because they bought his cars for the status symbol, not for performance.
Fiat increased their stake in the company to 90% in 1988, after the founder's death. Today, Fiat has an 85% share in the company. Enzo's second son, Piero, owns 10% of the company and acts as Vice President.
Today, Enzo Ferrari's cars live on as symbols of wealth and status, and his racecars continue to make an impact in the world's most prestigious racing competitions.

Ferrari Drawings



Ferrari, just the name gets me excited! Drawing Ferraris is something I have done since many years back and I never get tired of it. For me drawing a Ferrari is like physically experiencing the car as if it was right there in front of me. I learn more about the lines of the car and see lines that I would normally not notice when just seeing a picture of a Ferrari.
My favorite Ferrari to draw is probably the Enzo or the 250 GTO, both very different cars from different eras. Doing a Ferrari Enzo drawing is always exciting, because this car is so extreme and looks like no other. And because of the sharp edges it makes it a very challenging car to draw. While a Ferrari 250 GTO drawing is very hard to draw correctly because of the beautiful curves this car has. Then again the reward of pulling it off is totally worth the frustrating hours getting those lines right! A Ferrari F40 drawing is also very special to do, this car is so raw and its always a challenge to get that rawness to come alive in the drawing.
My best advise on how to improve your car drawings is simply to spend more time on them. For example if you are not fully satisfied with the front lights, don’t just continue with the drawing and hoping that the lights will get better by some magical touch! No, look at the lights and don’t give up on them until you are fully satisfied with them, then move on to the next part of the car drawing.
If you love Ferrari you should get your favorite pencil and sit down with a clean sheet of paper and just relax and start sketching your favorite Ferrari. Don’t give up to quickly, just focus on the general shape of the outward lines of the car and you will soon see how the sketch is becoming better. Remember patience is the key to success when drawing a Ferrari.

Ferrari was founded in 1929 by Enzo Ferrari and first produced cars in 1947. Today, the parent company for Ferrari is Fiat. The Ferraris engines are famous for their engine displacement technology. The V6 and the V8 are built in total displacement, while the V12 used a displacement of one cylinder. Some of the latest Ferrari models include the Ferrari 550, the 575 M Maranello, 599 GTB Fiorano, the 612 Scaglietti, the F355, the Ferrari 360, the F430, the Enzo Ferrari and the Ferrari FXX.
The 599 GTB Fiorano was started to be produced in 2007, and it is a Gran Turismo two seat berlinetta with a FR layout. The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is a follower of the Ferrari 456 and it is a 2+2 coupe Gran Turismo. It was first launched in 2004 and is still being manufactured. Another car also launched in 2004 is the Ferrari F430. It is a sports car and it is available as a two seat Berlinetta and as a two seat Spider. The Enzo Ferrari is a super car/ ultra car manufactured between 2002 and 2004 and was launched in the memory of the founder of the Ferrari company. The Enzo was manufactured in only 400 copies so it was a highly expensive item. It had a Berlinetta body style and a MR layout. The follower model of the Enzo Ferrari was the FXX, which is also a super car. The FXX was released in 2005, and is said to be an improved Enzo Ferrari with the same MR layout and Berlinetta body style. The FXX keeps many of the Enzo’s features but has also new cool features that are singular to the FXX. The car is highly expensive and it may be driven on special tracks only. The last FXX, the 30th was given to Michael Schumacher. A similar super car is the Maserati MC12 Corsa.
Ferrari si also responsilble for some concept models, which include among others the Ferrari P5, the Ferrari Pininfarina 512S Berlinetta Speciale, the Pininfarina Modulo, the Ferrari Mythos, the Ferrari GG50, the Ferrari P4/5 and the Ferrari Zagato 575 GTZ.
